In a bid to preserve its rich cultural heritage, Japan’s government plans to launch a national anime and manga archive, safeguarding iconic artworks and promoting understanding of these influential mediums.
The contemporary era has witnessed anime and manga’s ascendancy as Japan’s most vital and varied media forms, offering insightful reflections of modern Japanese society. Regrettably, this acknowledgment was delayed, leading to the disposal of irreplaceable original artwork, previously viewed as disposable.
Although significant losses occurred, some crucial anime and manga artifacts remain. The Japanese government’s Agency for Cultural Affairs has initiated efforts to conserve these historical materials. A recent discussion (September 30) involving esteemed creators Hideaki Anno and Machiko Satonaka outlined plans for a comprehensive national archive.
This new archive will be a treasure trove for anime and manga fans! It’ll store priceless cells and original drawings (genga), carefully preserved by experts. To fill the archive, the government will work with publishers and private collectors to gather these rare artifacts.
The anime/manga archive’s home is still TBD, but it might join the National Film Archive’s Sagamihara Branch. The goal is to open doors within six years. Don’t worry, the artwork won’t be locked away! It’ll be shared to fuel anime/manga passion, partnering with institutions worldwide.
